Our favorite story, since it was our very first! mapformation, LLC, our "parent" company, has developed thousands of custom map and diagram designs for clients across North America. Being in the business of designing maps and diagrams, they obviously have a very graphics-intensive web site. As the firm grew, the quantity of graphics and traffic on their site grew. After 4-5 years, bandwidth consumption began to spiral a bit out of control. At the same time, visitors to the site from dial-up and cable/DSL connections (especially outside of North America), began to "politely complain" that some of the portfolio material on the site was taking a LONG time to fully load and display.

Serious efforts were made to get those files sizes under control and, in a process that continues even today, the cumulative size of the graphics on that web site were reduced by over sixty (60) percent. At the same time, the web site experienced nearly DOUBLE the amount of traffic on its web site...all while consuming less total bandwidth than before any optimization work had been undertaken. Obviously, other factors contributed to the doubling of the number of visitors to that web site as well! However, faster page loads has helped to ensure that visitors can view the graphical content on that site as efficiently as possible. Quesenberry Real Estate is a small real estate firm based in southwestern Minnesota (USA). As is the case with many real estate web sites, "QRE" places numerous photos of the properties it has available for sale within its web site.
